100. Lessons learned from my first one hundred blog posts
People appreciate it when I write. I’ve gotten a ton of positive feedback on my posts. Shares on facebook, likes and recommendations. Comments and compliments. Very motivating.
They also sometimes don’t. I’ve also gotten into trouble because of my writing. With friends, with collegeaues, with romantic interests. People can be quite harsh, if they feel it’s called for.
I fuck up from time to time. Confirmation bias. Unspoken assumptions. Cultural differences. Plain stupidity and ignore. My fuckups teach me a lot, even if they’re rough.
It requires thick skin. Especially when your friends read and comment. Sometimes I consider not sharing my posts anymore. Then I pull myself together and get back on the horse.
I love reaching strangers. Sure, most of my readers are people I know. But not all. And every time someone I don’t know recommends or comments, it feels great. Even if they disagree!
I’ve steadily built an audience. Since Jan 2017, I’ve gone from 200 Medium followers to 3.1k. That’s not a huge number, but it’s not too shabby at all. And it’s still growing.
I’ve learned a lot about my own interests. If someone had said that I’d be writing about a toilet door handle at an airport, I’ve have laughed at the idea. Now? Not so much.
Writing spontaneously works best for me. I sometimes write posts that I have decided should be written. Most of my posts are spur-of-the-moment impulses, though.
I like listicles more than I did before. They’re easy to write (see?), they’re easy to read, and the lack of stringent narrative makes them easy to dive into and to get at least a little from.
I suck at pictures for my posts. I always have a picture. Sometimes the pictures even make sense. I rarely have more than one. I have a plan of getting better at this. At some point.
Most of all, I’m extremely glad that I started blogging. It gives me an outlet. It gives me a voice. It hones my skills. And I’d recommend it to anyone, who is as much as considering it.
