133. Ten larp videos I use when explaining about larp to non-larpers

Unsurprisingly, I get a lot of questions about larp. When I can, I answer by sending people a link to a great article, blog post, podcast episode or video. Especially videos are a good way to get to outsiders (non-larpers), because they show off what we do.

That means that I have a list of go-to videos that I point people to. I want to share that list with all of you. Maybe you’ll find some of these useful. And yes, several of these are from our own events, but that’s hard to avoid, since we do some pretty nice-looking stuff. ;-)

I’ve ordered them in short-medium-long length, to make it a little bit easier for you. Enjoy!

#1 ROAD TRIP TEASER
“We traveled the entirety of Route 66 with a fake rock band, playing real concerts along the way.” It’s a simple premise, and it’s catchy as hell.

#2 2017 LARP CALENDAR — DZIOBAK LARP STUDIOS
Sure, it’s our own stuff, but it’s nonetheless a tour-de-force in awesome-looking stuff and a short, easy-to-understand message.

#3 BJARKE PEDERSEN — BECOMING THE STORY (FOST 2016)
Bjarke Pedersen’s explanation of how larp affects the brain is not only beautifully illustrated, but also powerful and to-the-point.

#4 HELL ON WHEELS — WESTERN LARP
It looks bloody amazing, and since it references a popular TV series, it’s extremely easy for people to get the “Oh, so you can make TV real?” point.

#5 LARP: CRASH COURSE GAMES #26
Even though some of this is weird, it does an excellent job at explaining the basics, and the added legitimacy of Crash Course isn’t to be laughed at.

#6 BRING LARP TO A REFUGEE CAMP WITHOUT REALLY KNOWING HOW — MARTIN NIELSEN
Martin’s talk is honest, rough and heartwarming. It’s also a good introduction to how we use larp to change the world, even if it’s just a little.

#7 NORDIC LARP ON DISCOVERY (don’t worry, the link works)
14 min on serious larp documentary made for Discovery Channel/TLC, this is a winner when it comes to showing off the serious side of our hobby.

#8 LIVE IN DOWNTON ABBEY — FAIRWEATHER MANOR
Mo mo O’Brien has several great larp videos, but her reflections on Fairweather Manor make it extremely useful to show to non-larpers.

#9 COLLEGE OF WIZARDRY — DOCUMENTARY
Cosmic Joke’s 18 min film does an awesome job of showing off not just College of Wizardry, but larp as a hobby. Still makes me smile!

#10 WHAT DOES NORDIC LARP MEAN? — JAAKKO STENROS
I’m a huge larp theory geek, I know. But this talk is to me the epitome of the complexity that (Nordic) larp also is. Not for the faint of heart!
